The History
Symbolic of resilience and Mexican spirit, Cinco de Mayo is a day of celebration on the 5th of May every year. It commemorates the Battle of Puebla in 1862, where an outnumbered Mexican army beat French forces against all odds.
The words “Cinco de Mayo” refer to the date of May 5th, which today represents a bi-cultural day celebrating the beauty of Mexican culture across the globe. An opportunity to appreciate and celebrate Mexican pride and identity, Cinco de Mayo connects many over a story of strength in the face of great adversity.
The CELEBRATION
Located in east-central Mexico, Puebla is the birthplace of Cinco de Mayo and the main city in Mexico that celebrates the day.
A parade featuring battle re-enactments and Baile Folklorico (traditional Mexican folk dance) celebrates the day’s historic significance, with the spirit of the story further honoured by the community coming together after the parade to share food & drink. 
Puebla’s Baile Folklorico is called ‘Danza de los Quetzales’ (the Dance of the Quetzals). A cross-step dance that imitates the quetzal bird – with performers dressed in feathery crests and bright headdress which they have to balance on their head.
GYG’S ARtwork
This year, GYG is honouring Cinco de Mayo with artwork inspired by Puebla’s Baile Folklorico which is called Danza de los Quetzales (Dance of the Quetzal Bird).
A cross-step dance that imitates the Quetzal bird, Danza de los Quetzales performers dress in feathery crests representing the sacred Quetzal bird and balance a large bright headdress on their head.
The Quetzal bird is said to symbolise the spirit of a deity called Quetzalcoatl who transformed into the bird. You’ll see the vibrant feathers of the Quetzal & elements of Danza de los Quetzales in your local GYG this May 5th!
