Smithfield, What a Way to Welcome Us!

Smithfield, what an opening! We couldn’t be more excited to officially join the neighbourhood. A massive thank you to everyone who showed up to support the opening of our brand-new restaurant in Cairns. 

Word had spread across Cairns about the opening of GYG Smithfield, and the community did not disappoint, making it our second GYG restaurant to open in Cairns.  

The energy was high from open until close, with a queue forming before the doors opened and huge crowds from the James Cook University Smithfield campus, located up the road from GYG Smithfield.  

There was a big after school rush, with the restaurant quickly filling up with school kids and parents after 3pm.  

Leading opening day was Robin and Yoge Sehmi, proud local franchisees. Robin has been part of the GYG journey for two years, drawn to the brand through a shared set of values and a love for food.  

“We’re creating genuine local jobs and I’m incredibly excited to build a team that reflects the spirit of this community. “Smithfield is a fantastic location close to JCU and the Mountain Bike Park and we can’t wait to be the go-to spot for locals and visitors alike.” Said Robin. 

It was great to see so much support on the day with Robin and Yoge’s extended family flying in for the occasion. It was so special to see the pair’s son attend opening day, who was born in early January! 

Opening day was also supported by franchisee Steven Rice, who is eight weeks into owning GYG Earlville. Steven opened his doors to an incredible 46 crew members for pre-training, ensuring the Earlville team was ready to support Smithfield every step of the way.  Despite the distance being 1700km from Brisbane in Far North Queensland, we had a great showing of support from other franchisees and crew, who made the journey up to Cairns – displaying one of GYG’s core values of ‘having your back’.  

With both GYG Smithfield and GYG Earlville now open, the brand is now growing and climbing to new heights in Far North Queensland! 

A massive thank you to our amazing Smithfield crew and a huge shout-out to the Queensland franchisees who came out to support. You made opening day unforgettable, and we couldn’t have done it without you!
